Ike and Freddy

  • The Pug is recognized by the American Kennel Club as a member of the Toy group.
  • Pugs have quite the prestigious history. Not only did Queen Victoria help establish the Kennel Club which was founded in 1873, but she also bred pugs!
  • The word Pug is a European slang word for “dear one”.
  • Pugs were specifically bred to be companion dogs. They are known to be special dogs, and will gladly share the company of any family member or friend.
  • Pugs have a short square muzzle, large prominent eyes, a massive round head, thin small ears, a black mask, and a tail, which curls over the hip.
  • Pugs combine a cocky confidence with a friendly, sensitive nature and a unique personality. The Pug is known to be stubborn. The Pug is a big dog in a small package. Pugs typically weigh between 14 and 20 pounds.
  • The coat is soft and can be silver, apricot, fawn or black. Pugs are short coated and require little grooming.
  • Pugs are social animals and love to be petted, groomed and played with.
  • A Pug, even abused and older ones, generally adapt to change readily. This of course, makes the task of relocating the Pug to a new home much easier.

The American Kennel Club describes a Pug as follows:

The Pug is well described by the phrase "multum in parvo" which means "a lot of dog in a small space." They are recognized for their even-tempers, playful personalities, and their outgoing, loving dispositions. This square and cobby breed comes in fawn, silver fawn, apricot fawn or black, with a well-defined "mask" on his muzzle. A popular companion dog, the pug also excels in the show ring.

A Look Back

The Pug is well described by the phrase “multum in parvo” which means “a lot of dog in a small space”. They are appreciated for their playful personalities, their outgoing, loving dispositions and their even tempers. The Pug is one of the oldest breeds of dogs and has flourished since before 400 BC. China is the earliest known source for Pugs, where they were pets of the Buddhist monasteries in Tibet.

The British Kennel Club say Pugs are gaining in popularity as owners adopt smaller breeds for cramped city living. But ancient Chinese Emperors were also smitten with the little pooch, preventing "outsiders" from owning one.

Dutch traders brought the breed to the west in 16th century. It's name is thought come from the Latin for "fist" because of the shape of the dog's face.

Highly intelligent, they can be a bit willful if they sense they are stronger minded than their human companions. The Pug’s reason for living is to be near their people and to please them, and their personalities make them a family favorite.

Is a Pug the right breed for You?

The Pug’s reason for living is to be near their people and to please them, and their sturdiness makes them a family favorite. They are comfortable in small apartments because they need minimal exercise, but the breed can adapt easily to all situations. The Pug sheds, but its short coat requires little grooming.

A breed that adapts easily to any situation, from living in a home with a big yard to residing in a small apartment with minimal exercise, Pugs are known for being playful, social and willing to please, according to the AKC. While they’re popular companion dogs, they also excel in dog shows. They need minimal exercise and because of their short coats, require little grooming.
