PLEASE NOTE that Michigan law requires that any person who finds a lost animal must immediately (within 48 hours) report that animal to the local law enforcement. Most counties (and several cities) in the state have registered animal shelters which are authorized to hold animals in public view for owners to claim them. Use the map below to find the shelter that houses lost pets in your area.

If your pet is missing, it’s up to you to aggressively search for him or her.  State of Michigan law requires that animal shelters hold stray pets for 4 days if they have no form of identification or 7 days if they do have some form of identification — such as a microchip, tattoo or tag. The more action you take, and the sooner you begin searching, the more likely you are to find your lost pet. MPAW recommends visiting all area shelters soon and often, ideally every day but at least every 2 or 3 days. MPAW recommends that ALL pets (including indoor-only pets) wear both visible identification (tag) and be microchipped

Spay or Neuter your pets.

Consider these facts from the Humane Society of the United States pet overpopulation facts from 1999.

One female cat and her subsequent offspring can produce 420,000 cats in (7) seven years

One female dog and her subsequent offspring can produce 67,000 dogs in six (6) years

TOP TEN REASONS TO ADOPT AN OLDER DOG!!

1. Older dogs are  housetrained. You won't have to go through the difficult stage(s) of teaching a puppy house manners and mopping up after accidents.

2. Older dogs are not teething puppies, and won't chew your shoes and furniture while growing up.

3. Older dogs can focus well because they've mellowed. Therefore, they learn quickly.

4. Older dogs have learned what "no" means. If they hadn't learned it, they wouldn't have gotten to be "older" dogs.

5. Older dogs settle in easily, because they've learned what it takes to get along with others and become part of a pack.

6. Older dogs are good at giving love, once they get into their new, loving home. They are grateful for the second chance they've been given. 7. What You See Is What You Get: Unlike puppies, older dogs have grown into their shape and personality. Puppies can grow up to be quite different from what they seemed at first. 8. Older dogs are instant companions -- ready for hiking, car trips, and other things you like to do. 9. Older dogs leave you time for yourself, because they don't make the kinds of demands on your time and attention that puppies and young dogs do. 10. Older dogs let you get a good night's sleep because they're accustomed to human schedules and don't generally need nighttime feedings, comforting, or bathroom breaks.

Harmful Plants

The web site listed below provides information about plants that may be harmful to your dog

http://www.1stinflowers.com/articles/poisonous-plants-for-dogs.html

7 Human Foods that can be Harmful to Your Dog

1. Avocados

Eating any part of the avocado plant can cause severe health problems in dogs that may result in death.

2. Xylitol

Eating foods that contain xylitol can cause a dog's blood sugar to drop drastically. This can cause health problems, liver failure and death.

3. Coffee, Tea and Other Caffeine

Consuming caffeine can cause abnormal heart rhythm or lung failure in dogs, which can ultimately lead to death. Coffee, tea and other sources of caffeine should be kept away from dogs.

4. Grapes and Raisins

Grapes and raisins are highly toxic to dogs. Even very small amounts can lead to kidney failure, which can be fatal.

5. Alcohol and Yeast Dough

f a dog consumes alcohol, it can lead to serious health problems and even death. This can also happen if a dog eats raw yeast dough.

6. Chocolate

Eating chocolate can cause a whole slew of health problems in dogs and can even kill them. The darker the chocolate, the more toxic it is.

7. Salt

Eating too much salt can cause water deprivation in dogs, which can be deadly. You should avoid feeding salted foods to your dog and make sure fresh drinking water is always available.

Other Foods That May Be Harmful to Your Dog

The following foods have not been proven deadly to dogs, but they can still be harmful.

To be safe, you may want to avoid feeding the following foods to your dog.

Onions, garlic and chives

These can damage a dog's red blood cells and cause anemia. In severe cases, your dog could require a blood transfusion

Milk and dairy products

Like humans, dogs can become intolerant to lactose over time. Consuming milk and dairy products may lead to vomiting, diarrhea and other digestive problems in dogs

Macadamia nuts

These contain an unknown toxin that can cause weakness, muscle tremors and vomiting in dogs. Because of their high fat content, macadamia nuts can also lead to pancreatitis, or an inflamed pancreas

Apples, apricots, cherries, peaches and plums

Their seeds or pits contain cyanide, which is poisonous. Eating them can lead to some pretty serious side effects, including digestive problems

If you know your dog has ingested something toxic, consult your veterinarian immediately or call the pet poison hotline.

Treatment will vary depending upon your dog's symptoms and the type of food they was exposed to.

You should never treat or medicate a dog unless a licensed veterinarian advises you to do so.
